Harnessing growth to support long-time residents
Located near the epicenter of the tech boom, Oakland — a city rooted in blue-collar values and civic action — has experienced unprecedented growth in a relatively short time. While this presents a chance to advance much needed programming and infrastructure, it also raises concerns about protecting the quality of life of longtime residents who make up the very fabric of the city. Using a residents-first approach, the Mayor’s Office sought to harness the financial opportunity while ensuring that everyone — particularly the most vulnerable — see the benefits.
